I would like to communicate the great importance of agriculture, especially as a food producer, for the ecosystem (dis)services and in landscape conservation, to my students. The competencies for understanding contexts, complex thinking and critical questioning by the students are of great importance to me. My teaching events are intended to prepare students for the social and professional tasks that await them in their varying careers. Since learning is an individual and active process, I expect learning efforts from the students and would like to encourage self-study. The goal here is to foster deep understanding oriented learning. I want to achieve these goals through didactic diversity and modern knowledge transfer. Instead of pure frontal teaching, I rely on a variety of teaching methods (short quiz, troubleshooting of a formula, individual, pair or group work phases, 3-minute papers at the end of the lecture, etc.)
My experiences in the field of teaching relate to lecturing (including practical trainings and field excursions), the supervision of Ph.D. candidates, Master and Bachelor theses, as well as the development of various teaching-learning offers (e.g. the video-based Open Online Courses on “Crop growth modeling for improved irrigation scheduling”, UNESCO). Since 2017, I gave lectures in the study programs Agrarwissenschaften (B.Sc.), Nutzpflanzenwissenschaften (M.Sc.), Agricultural Science and Resource Management in the Tropics and Subtropics (M.Sc.), and Science Nature Conservation and Landscape Ecology (M.Sc.) at the University of Bonn together with colleagues including lectures in the courses “Crop Ecosystem Analysis and modeling”, “Production Ecology” and “Anbau, Ertragsbildung und Ertragsfaktoren landwirtschaftlicher und gärtnerischer Kulturpflanzen”, among others. Since this semester, I offer a new lecture I am responsible for named “Irrigation Agriculture” for the three M.Sc. study programs listed above. The promotion of young scientists and students is very important to me. I supported several students in establishing contacts with renowned scientists and in generating funds for research stays in the USA, Israel, and France.
Since 2017 I give lectures in the following courses (see link):
- Irrigation Agriculture (new since SS2022) (M. Sc. Agric. Science Trop/Subtr., Naturschutz und Landschaftsökologie, Nutzpflanzenwissensch)
- Spezieller Pflanzenbau
- Resource Conservation (NPW-003)
- Natural resource use and management in plant production (MA-E-01-PM, ARTS BS-10)
- Crop Ecology (ARTS AS5, MA-03-P)
- Research in Cropping systems (NPW-016 und ARTS-BS10)
2013: Workshop on Pflanzenwachstumsmodellierung (crop growth modeling) at the conference “Bewässerungslandbau in Deutschland – Forschung trifft Anwendung (Irrigated crop production in Germany – research meets application)”, 24th – 25th September 2013 at the Technische Universität Dresden, Germany. see https://tu-dresden.de/bu/umwelt/hydro/ihm/hydrologie/forschung/projekte/saphir/workshop-2013
2012: Production of two video-based Open Educational Ressources entitled “Crop growth modeling for improved irrigation scheduling – Part I and II” as part of the UNESCO E-Learning application: IWRM education. Available at http://www.iwrm-education.de/#!seidel1 and http://www.iwrm-education.de/#!seidel2
since 2008: Supervision of various Diploma, Master, and Bachelor Theses.
